Olympian Colleen Quigley joins us on the show today to discuss cross training. We will hear more about Colleen’s journey here in a few minutes, but let’s talk through a few of Colleen’s accolades.
Colleen is a professional runner with notable sponsors including Lululemon, Whoop, and Hyperice, just to name a few.
In addition to running, Colleen is a volunteer assistant coach, does race commentary, modeling, has a degree in dietetics, and founded the trend Fast Braid Friday, just to name a few of her additional “hats.”

Reflections:
Colleen’s suggestion to use your cross training time as your indulgence time is a really great suggestion. I’ve used this method and it makes you WANT to hop on the bike and maybe even sneak in an extra few minutes.
A couple cross training suggestions:
- Aqua jogging is great for recovery, but does not build fitness as well as other types of cross training. This is a great option for zero impact. PT Hope VanDyke suggests wearing more clothing to elevate your heart rate to get a better aerobic workout. We have an episode all about the research and implementation of Aqua Jogging on episode 99 of the A to Z Running Podcast.
- Biking is an excellent choice of cross training for runners. You can work harder on the bike more often. We did an episode with Dr. Todd Buckingham called, Cycling for Runners on episode 105 of the A to Z Running Podcast.
- Swimming-
- Research, Effects of a recovery swim on running performance. The findings of the present study showed that a swimming-based recovery session enhanced following day exercise performance, possibly due to the hydrostatic properties of water and its associated influence on inflammation.
- Swimming can grow your cardiovascular endurance as well as strengthen almost the entire body without the pounding.

#2. Oliver Hoare Wins Australian Nationals

- Watching Olli holding back in the video was entertaining. First lap was over 60 seconds. Olli took the race by the second lap. Led the second lap, by the third he was really testing the rest of the field. He had two others with him at the bell. In the final lap he stretched it out to win his first national title.

#3. Paris Marathon

- Men’s Race
- Kick finish for men
- Deso Gelmisa won in a time of 2:05:07, his second fastest-ever over the distance behind his PB of 2:04:53 in 2020.
- Gelmisa’s fellow Ethiopian Seifu Tura, winner of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon last October, finished three seconds behind his compatriot in 2:05:10.
- French national record (Morhad Amdouni) in 2:05:22 (3rd ish place)
- Women’s race
- Winner was Judith Korir Jeptum
- 2:19:48
- Taking almost three minutes off her PB and more than a minute off the course record.
- She was the first woman to run sub 2:20 on French roads.
- French female all-comers record
- 10th place was Lindsay Flanagan of the USA
